Laryngeal cancer

The Larynx is what we commonly refer to as the voice box. The larynx plays a vital role in our day to day lives by letting air we breathe reach our lungs, preventing food from entering the windpipe during swallowing and houses our vocal cords which create our voice.

Treatment options for Laryngeal cancer is dependent on the positioning of the cancer on the larynx, your consultant/doctor can discuss these treatment options with you.

Things to look out for

Symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • When the tumour is close to the vocal cords: A change in voice is a common sign of laryngeal cancer, the tumour if in the area of the vocal cords will prevent the cords vibrating as they usually would which results in hoarseness.
  • Tumours in a part of the larynx not in close proximity to vocal cords: An early symptom may begin with feeling as thought there is a lump in the neck or the throat, which may cause difficulty in swallowing. Other early symptoms could include shortness of breath and or an ongoing earache.
