Leukaemia is a cancer which is related to the white blood cells within our body, these cells are produced by our bone marrow. There are different types of leukaemia which sit under two main groupings:

• Acute: this group is aggressive, progressing rapidly and needing immediate medical treatment. Acute leukaemia’s fall under two subgroups; Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML).
• Chronic: this group of leukaemia’s are slow growing and tend to develop over years, chronic leukaemia’s can also be sub-grouped as; Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) and Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML).

In a healthy person white blood cells are produced, grown and divided in controlled and structured patterns. Leukaemia causes this process to become erratic causing the cells to continue dividing and failing to mature.
